We live in a time when people are separated, hidden, belittled, and pitted against each other. In this “connected” world, we see more and more disconnection.
People get lumped into pre-defined groups based on an uttered phrase or a posted comment, without regard for nuances or chance to explore underlying intentions. When we get labeled, we withdraw to avoid further misjudgment – and we grow further apart.
Our communities are fractured, and the damage is easy to see.
This has gone on long enough. Let’s make a change and step out from behind our screens. We must connect authentically with each other, open our hearts, and seek to understand our fellow humans.
The Cornered Portrait Project explores real people in Seattle and the stories that emerge when they show up as themselves. “Getting Cornered” brings a sense of humor to the experience of being put on the spot to be photographed, while showing the rest of us that there is goodness in people everywhere.
We don’t have to avert our gaze when we walk by someone on the sidewalk. We can smile and say “hello,” knowing they have something endearing about them, whether we see it on the surface or not.

Art is a creative goofball. Known for his one-liners, and his unique perspective on everyday experiences, he is a loving, kind, gentle, stubborn, and passionate guy.
Accepting, authentic, and fun-loving. That’s Liz. She knows life is short, and you might as well have some fun while you’re here.
Nathan Daum is Shoreline’s Economic Development Manager. He is passionate and optimistic - the perfect combination for making positive change in the community.
Shoreline's 2025 Mayor Chris Roberts and I were both parent volunteers at Cascade K-8 Community School . Chris shows up when he’s needed. He is pragmatic in his thinking, and aims to support local businesses and vibrant neighborhoods throughout the area.
Silje is the 2024 recipient of Shoreline’s Community Champion award and the director of Friends of Third Place Commons. She has a great big heart and a passion for bringing people together.
Oh look – it’s me, Lara! It’s amazing how some of our experiences are big and sticky, but others are fleeting and too easy to forget. I create portraits because I want to protect our heritage and preserve our memories for future generations.
Betsy has a big heart, and a wonderful sense of humor! She is the 2026 Shoreline Mayor, and Director of Communications for the Red Cross' Northwest Region.
Mike is a neighborhood hero. He goes out every day to clean up litter from the streets. As he says, “Litter multiplies!” He’s seen a drastic decrease in the amount of garbage since he committed to this work. If you see Mike walking in the neighborhood, make sure you say hello!
Nolan is an energetic kid with his eyes on the prize. He is bold and feisty, but he’s also a team player who wants to contribute and make things work. Nolan is an example for all of us to go for the things we want. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!
Elliott is full of life, and passion for fun! One of his big dreams is to buy an RV and go traveling. He’s actively working toward this goal by asking everyone he knows for money. What a forward-thinking guy! There’s so much kids can teach us and Elliott is no exception.
Meet Lauren. Cat-lover, puzzle-doer, and community-connector. Lauren is a former board member of the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, and currently she's on the City of Shoreline’s Planning Commission. She is an awesome volunteer with a big heart.
Alyssa is a super woman! She perseveres, she takes risks, and she has fun while she does it. It was really fun to have her in the studio for a session in the corner.
Meet Maia! Oh, and of course, meet her family too: Joey, Miles, Elliott, and Maxine. Maia is the branch manager of the BECU on Ballinger Way in Shoreline, Washington. She is lovely and vibrant, with an overflowing supply of fun and fantastic ideas.
Laura is full of amazing stories. She grew up in Rochester, NY near the shores of Lake Ontario and within walking distance of the home of Eastman Kodak’s founder, George Eastman. That spot is now a world-renowned photography museum! How cool is that?
Megan grew up on the island of Oahu, HI and has deep respect for the Hawaiian culture. After living in Seattle for over 20 years, Megan says, “I carry Hawaii with me but I’m grounded in Seattle. Being part of the outrigger canoe paddling community allows me to bring these two identities together.”
Laura is a loved art teacher and respected member of the community. She contributes through volunteering, participating in her local Rotary club, and just being a good person.
Liz is creative and lively. She loves to read, and she loves to write. She seeks out time with people she loves. Her ability to see and share the beauty in her world inspires me. Liz does the work it takes to live richly and stay fulfilled. I wanna be like Liz.
Hana was a sweet little girl, minding her own business, when she was diagnosed with brain cancer and everything changed. Hana has become a warrior – surviving multiple surgeries, enduring test after test, and treatment after treatment. Hana is a lovely young lady with a fantastic sense of humor, who lives with strength and enthusiasm.
Karli is mom to two “big” kids, and an inspiration to all of us. She has been through many challenges, including health issues, a divorce, and her daughter’s long fight with brain tumors. But she maintains a sense of joy and generosity.
Jose got Cornered on his birthday, excited to be part of the project. He wore his work clothes because this is how he spends most of his days. A major value for Jose is “to always work hard no matter what I do. Whether it’s at work on the 777X airplanes that I work on, or at home cleaning and doing yard work… I pull up my sleeves and work.”
Shyra and Samantha are a sweet mother and daughter who share a deep connection. Lovers of the theatre, they enjoy hanging out at The Muddy Cup in Seattle, and checking out the local beaches at low tide.
Cari is a spunky girl! She is full of enthusiasm and loves to perform for the camera. Cari is unstoppable. You go, girl!
Kibebew. He is an amazing young man: patient, confident, and kind. He was born in Africa, and adopted here in Washington at a very young age. Recently, Kibebew had a chance to reconnect with his birth family in Africa. He understands the importance of enjoying every moment. Kibebew is an inspiration.
Jack Malek sees kindness among friends, generosity among strangers, and incredible prosperity throughout the community. His excitement for what’s to come is infectious! Jack's philosophy: Lead with a giving hand.
Odin is awesome. He keeps his paws on the ground, he understands that leashes can’t go through trees, and he almost never barks (unless he sees a raccoon or a dog in a car). He'll also happily get "Cornered" for a treat!
Madi is a bundle of energy, love, and creativity. She’s here in the corner with her best friend, Izzy - a dog who is as perfect a match for someone as I've ever seen. Woof!
Violet is a super sweet little thing, with an edge to her personality. She sings, she glares, she smiles. She knows how to express herself! Violet is a joy to be around, bringing laughter to everyone in her path.
If you hang around in Shoreline at all, you surely know this lovely person, Kate Ledbetter. The founder of Destination Shoreline, Kate’s passion for the little city is palpable! She lives, works, and plays in Shoreline, and she aims to let everyone know what a great place it is.
Rowan's personality has always been fun, feisty, strong-willed, and full of life. For her time in the Corner, Rowan chose to honor her dad's memory by holding their last family portrait together. It’s a heartwarming tribute made by a sweet girl who is older than her years.
Rose is a true Shoreline original. A behind-the-scenes rockstar, she is co-owner of the beloved duo of Spin Alley Bowling and Vault 177. Rose’s professional creativity is matched only by her delight in skulls and dahlias - both of which she collects the way some people collect tea sets or figurines.
Courtney is an old friend - a beautiful, free spirit who enjoys watching live music with friends. She and her family spend a lot of time cheering at the race track, too. Courtney likes to travel, cook, and make the people around her happy!
In this Cornered portrait, Mark holds a painting that his father made, depicting him in his role as the Auctioneer in Phantom of the Opera. It’s more than a memento; it’s a testament to his professional journey. Mark’s commitment to his acting career is inspiring. He knows who he is and doesn’t stray from his path.
Judi (my mom) is a musician - especially talented and skilled in guitar. But she also plays flute & piano, and she’s got some mean vocals! My mom has been rockin’ it out in a band non-stop since the 1960's. Judi has kindness in her heart, a lust for adventure, and friends nearly everywhere around the globe.
This unicorn is named Doris. She heals people with her magical powers through her business called Moonshine Wellness. Her mission is to help people prevent, recognize, and recover from burnout. A rainbow follows Doris around. It’s hard to feel down in the dumps in her presence.
Jessy has a pep to her step that is really fun to be around! She is excited to face a challenge, and isn’t afraid to ask for what she wants.
Laura James is known for her enthusiasm and her steady commitment to keeping the arts in our community. Her roots in the arts go back to college, where she first pursued photography before earning a degree in art education. She's a community champion!
Laura's mission is to help people understand their mind-body connection so they can feel lighter in every way. A mom to three grown “kids,” Laura can relate to just about anyone’s challenges. She is warm and kind, and her energy puts you at ease. She’s an inspiration for sure!
A Note From the Artist
The feeling of trepidation when being photographed reminds us of times we’ve been judged unfairly, whether by others or by ourselves.
When you embrace the experience and allow yourself to shine, something profound can happen. First, you might meet yourself more honestly, and grow as a result. But perhaps more importantly, your act of courage in that moment might serve as an example and inspiration for others to approach the world with more authenticity.
“Cornered” began simply as a playful way to make use of a quirky spot in our studio. But it quickly became something more. It’s a testament to the courage that surfaces when we allow ourselves to pause, reflect, and be seen. Sharing these moments publicly spurs vulnerability and compassion between humans. It is inspiring to watch our peers reveal and celebrate little parts of themselves that sometimes feel invisible. Being visible in this way is what we’re made for!
My goal with this project is to show that no matter what we may see with a first encounter, each individual has a beautiful story unfolding - one of strength and value. Your life is a work of art, and the art of photography can turn it into a masterpiece to be savored for many generations.
